Abstract GIS and GPS Technology for Developing and Locating Gas Pipelines Track: Pipeline Author(s): Syed Ali Naqi, Zawwar Hussain, Nadia Akhter GPS and GIS technology is the way of the future for the utility industry. Any organization that requires accurate location information can benefit from efficiency and productivity provided by GPS & GIS technology. Every day, from electric, gas and water utilities to telecommunications companies are using geospatial technology to manage their assets with greater precision, streamline everyday tasks, and analyze field data to make important and informed business decisions. Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is engaged in the business of transmission and distribution of natural gas in 1200 towns of Sindh and Balochistan provinces in Pakistan. SSGC is using GIS and GPS technologies for maintaining and managing its 3200 Km of high pressure transmission and 29832 Km of distribution network for 1.9million industrial, commercial and domestic consumers. This paper focuses on the use of GIS and GPS technology for developing and locating buried gas pipelines especially in SSGC's remote areas.
