Managing an Enterprise Level GIS - Lessons Learned
Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
Author(s): Jason Fortier

This paper presents the lessons learned from implementing and managing an enterprise level GIS for the Air Force Real Property Agency (AFRPA).

GIS was selected as the agency-wide system integration platform. Now, after less than two years the agency has successfully integrated many of its legacy systems into one web based tool. To reach this level of sustainment, however, was not without challenge. Processes, workflow patterns and new standards were at times difficult to implement.

The geographical information system can be an effective integration platform. However, sustainability at the enterprise level may be difficult for some organizations to obtain. This paper highlights the AFRPA experience through standards, processes and paradigm shifts to create and sustain a functioning enterprise level GIS.
