Medellin's Urban Growth (Colombia´s Andes): Environmental Education Perspective
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Author(s): Carlos Rios Uribe

Environmental Education contributes to people´s conscientization process (Awareness + Action, Freire, 1997) using GIS and remote sensing. Specifically, Urban growth is attached to multiple environmental impacts which affect human health and sustainability. For this reason, city planners, educators and the community in general require to understand better the spatio-temporal dynamics of the urban growth where we/they live to make more conscious decisions. The main goal of this project is to observe the spatiotemporal dynamic changes of Medellin`s urban center, Colombia, between the years 1986 and 2000 using Landsat satellite images in order for Environmental Educators to use them in free-choice learning environments to raise awareness and to influence decision making actions in the citizenship. It is possible to observe the satellite images over a DEM (3D Analysis) to understand the physical constraints which limits the urban growth of El Valle de Aburra (Medellin, Colombia) in Los Andes, South America.
