Abstract Transportation Planning Research with Integrated Remote Sensing and GIS Track: Transportation Author(s): Colin Brooks, Eric Keefauver, Richard Powell, Robert Shuchman, Ben Koziol Integrating remote sensing data with GIS to support transportation planning shows promise for improving planning processes and reducing time needed to complete transportation projects. We have been engaged with the Michigan Department of Transportation in researching the capabilities of high-resolution remote sensing to provide answers to transportation problems. Study results show that remote sensing can rapidly produce roadway feature inventories that can be integrated with asset management databases using linear referencing in ArcGIS. Transportation noise models can ingest topographic data and imagery in ArcGIS to help understand noise issues. Existing state GIS databases can be integrated with updated land cover maps to locate potential wetlands mitigation sites. ArcHydro can be used to understand the impacts of potential transportation projects on hydrologic flow using high-resolution topography derived from radar data. ArcIMS can be used to effectively share research. This research will help transportation agencies in their project planning processes.
