Abstract The Civil Military Emergency Preparedness and the Role of GIS Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Andrew Bruzewicz Since 1998 the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been responsible for managing over 55 activities as part of the Civil Military Emergency Preparedness (CMEP) program, a Warsaw Initiative activity in Europe and Central Asia. This presentation explains the rationale for the CMEP program and provides a short review of the evolution of GIS as a program component. Within the context of CMEP, GIS has evolved from the demonstration of a capability to the subject of seminars designed for single nations and GIS workshops involving GIS practitioners within a region. CMEP provides introductory and advanced GIS tracks in its workshops and is preparing to move to a four tiered sequence of increasingly advanced GIS concepts. Examples of GIS uses within CMEP are provided.
