Visualization and Analysis of Multidimensional Data: Atmospheric Data Modeling
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Olga Wilhelmi, Jennifer Boehnert

GIS science and technology have evolved from the requirements
of a GIS community which until recently did not include
atmospheric scientists. Significant progress has been made to
extend capabilities of Esri GIS visualization and analysis tools to
the needs of atmospheric and oceanographic communities.
Developing a community-based Atmospheric Data Model for
ArcGIS has begun with the goal to create means for effective
organization of atmospheric data and facilitate extension of Esri
GIS capabilities for representing and analyzing atmospheric data
formats in a geographic context. The main focus of the
Atmospheric Data Model work has been on extending ArcGIS
functionality for adopting NetCDF CF data format by ArcGIS core
software. This enabled ingest and analysis of multidimensional
NetCDF data products within the Esri suite of tools. We will
provide an overview of Atmospheric Data Modeling activities,
including examples of traditional ArcGIS data modeling and
applications using NetCDF data within ArcGIS.
