Swisstopo's Topographic Geographic Information System

Esri Switzerland is implementing a high performance infrastructure called TOPographic Geographic Information System (TOPGIS) for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo).

For TOPGIS a new Topographic Landscape Model (TLM) is being developed that is: 3D, very up-to-date, and has better than one-meter accuracy. TOPGIS is the central production infastructure for the TLM and also for a LIDAR-based Digital Terrain Model (DTM-TLM). Both datasets are updated using ADS40 imagery, and the system supports three simultaneous modes:

• 3D TLM editing (stereo photogrammetry)
• DTM-TLM editing (stereo photogrammetry)
• 2.5D TLM editing (mono-plotting from orthophotos)

TOPGIS is built on Esri ArcGIS 9.x and seamlessly integrates digital photogrammetry. It provides GIS data to a large number of products, particularly for the national topographical map series.
