ArcGIS is the standard program used at USOUTHCOM to create maps and perform geospatial analysis. All of the military analysts working in the geospatial production section are trained IA's (Imagery Analysts) by trade. Because of this almost everyone comes in with no prior experience in using GIS software packages. Classroom training is not common, so often analysts must teach themselves the basics of ArcGiS. By using these tools it reduces possible errors by automating many manual processes, and eliminates confusion by clearly defining the name and action of each button. Points can be added to a shapefile by typing in Degrees Minutes Seconds as opposed to Decimal Degrees which is used by ArcGIS. Base data can be displayed by selecting choices from a list instead of manually having to add and query each layer. By using this set of tools analysts are seeing immediate results.
