Incorporating the National Grid into NGA Homeland Security Geospatial Products
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Michael Jonas

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) North America and Homeland Security division has adopted the Federal Geographic Data Committee's standard of incorporating the US National Grid on geospatial products. The reason for moving towards this standard is the requirement to create a consistent grid model to be used within the federal homeland security geospatial community. NGA has developed a solution to incorporate the US National Grid into geospatial products using the PLTS Grid Manager in ArcGIS 9.2. Through the PLTS Grid Manager, NGA analysts have the ability to select their area of interest and choose from a variety of NGA-manufactured XML files that will automatically calculate the grid. In the event that a series of maps are to be produced over the same area of interest, the PLTS Grid Manager allows NGA analysts the ability to use the same grid between projects, thus saving the analyst time.
