Abstract Accurate Field Control; A Better GIS, A Better Product Track: Surveying Author(s): Bill Rhoades, Karen Koklich Geographic Information Systems have been spectacularly successful. As GIS proliferates, it offers innovation and opportunity that no other extant technology can. GIS like all location based activities or services is deeply dependent on the accurate integration of the positional environment. This session there discuss the nature of field control and the role it must play in planning a GIS and in raising the accuracy of any GIS. What is the role of the California Land Survey Community in GIS and how can professional land surveyors assist the GIS professionals in integrating the disparate elements that comprise any GIS? Also addressed will be the questions of keeping a GIS in tune with the latest changes in datums, epochs and the vagaries of crustal motion. Much of the future of GIS is in raising the standards and this session will deal with precisely that.
