Implementing Linear Referencing for the Nation's Pipeline Network

Linear referencing is used by most pipeline operators for asset management. However, unique challenges arose when the US pipeline regulatory authority, PHMSA, investigated building a linearly referenced GIS dataset incorporating all transmission pipelines. Each operator uses a different method of mileposting their pipelines, and pipelines frequently change operators or change attributes. The presentation will address challenges in building and maintaining the dataset, as well as the benefits derived from using linear referencing to enable historical tracking, which provides each pipeline with a permanent, unique identifier.
