Innovative Management of an Enterprise Spatial Information Infrastructure
Track: Electric Utilities
Author(s): Liza van der Merwe

Eskom is the South African national electricity utility. The Eskom Transmission Division started a departmental geographical information system (GIS) in 1990. Today Transmission boasts an enterprise GIS solution - Transmission Spatial Information System (TxSIS). TxSIS has evolved over time to become an integral part of the information systems landscape in the Transmission business. The interactive Web and map based system has grown to being used by 600 employees by mid-2008.

TxSIS supports business processes as diverse as new transmission line project route planning, servitude acquisition and legal portfolio management, servitude and vegetation management, environmental management and regulatory reporting.

By all standards TxSIS has been a low cost, low resource utilisation business solution. This shortage of resources is calling for innovative ways of managing the system. This paper will explore the latest thinking in the management of the spatial information infrastructure in support of Transmission's spatial decision support solutions.
