Abstract![]() Planning and Implementation of a Large Scale GIS Day Track: Education Author(s): Robert Wachal, Mark Lindsey The North Central Texas Council of Governments, University of North Texas, South Central Arc User Group and Geospatial Information & Technology Association hosted a GIS Day event at the University on November 18, 2008. The purpose of this event was to deliver a greater awareness of what GIS means to our local citizens, municipal leaders, business and academic communities. GIS Day reached over 1000 participants, including many elementary school children visiting UNTs Learning Center. Several strategies were used to promote and inspire participation including a GIS Job Fair, a Geography knowledge game, prize drawings, and a student poster competition. In addition several Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex GIS firms demonstrated their use of GIS and a map gallery showcased over 50 maps from local users. The event clearly demonstrated how multiple and diverse agencies can host a successful GIS Day for a diverse group of participants. Robert Wachal City of Highland Village 1000 Highkand Village Rd.
