AbstractUsing GIS in the Emergency Operations Center Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response Author(s): Devon Humphrey The role of GIS in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been expanding in recent years due to its inherent capability to serve as a data fusion environment. During a crisis, information from a variety of sources can be integrated into a Common Operational Picture using GIS so that decision-makers can plan and manage situations better. Elements can include realtime weather, plume models, GPS and other visual intelligence. In addition to assuming a central role within the EOC, GIS can also be utilized in a mobile, or virtual EOC environment. Emerging technologies, techniques and data sources will be discussed. Real world case studies will be shown, including examples from Hurricane Ike, which struck Galveston, Texas in 2008.
