Abstract

Targeting Sewerage Infrastructure Investment
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Simon Gee

The privatised water industry in England and Wales is tightly regulated in regard to investment in its asset base. There is an essential need to understand and forecast infrastructure asset behaviour and for smarter planning techniques.

The approach comprises a set of GIS and mathematical modelling tools that enable sewerage undertakers to target expensive CCTV surveys on sewers likely to represent the greatest risk and to adopt a sustainable approach to long-term sewerage rehabilitation. It seeks to derive maximum value from existing corporate data through a series of innovative processes.

A GIS-base prioritisation model uses spatial analysis of service issues and predicted collapse risk to identify sewers for investigation and to package CCTV programmes according to company priorities.

The approach has been implemented in two water companies, where it yield up to a 40% return of sewers with rehabilitation requirements, compared to around 15% previously, a >50% budget saving.
