Finding the Sidewalks: Bicycle & Pedestrian Facility Inventory Using GPS/GIS
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Chris Lukasina, Michael Naber

As interest in bicycle and pedestrian facilities continue to rise across the United States a dynamic record of existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities is vital to providing quality maintenance of existing facilities as well as identifying future opportunities for bicycle and pedestrian transportation. Connections with other transportation modes and integration with the landscape and urban land uses can be identified and appropriate funding requirements can be developed. By using off the shelf GPS and GIS solutions a geodatabase has been developed to provide information for future planning efforts and managing existing maintenance needs. The geodatabase was created to capture vital facility information including location, type and condition of facility, width, accessibility, and other attributes. The geodatabase and collection methodology has been used to conduct inventories in nine counties, two national defense installations, and 55 municipalities ranging in size from a population of 70 to a population of over 100,000.
