One of the important aims of the German Governmental Crop Protection Service is to reduce spraying intensity to guarantee a sustainable crop protection strategy. ZEPP is the central institution in Germany responsible for the development of methods to forecast diseases based on meteorological data. So far more than 20 Decision Support Systems (DSS) are introduced into agricultural practice. This study shows that by using GIS it is possible to obtain results with higher accuracy for the DSS’s. Interpolation of met. data considering elevation, slope and aspect in GIS was done. The result is a grid of 200,000 virtual met. Stations, one for each square kilometre of arable land in Germany. The virtual met. stations output is used as input for DSS’s. Differences of forecasted and recorded data for the outbreak of Late Blight disease in potatoes were three days. Currently additional disease forecast models are adapted to this method.
