Lavasa, a new Hill-Station of 25,000 acres of land, is located in the western mountain ranges of India, approachable from the two major cities, Mumbai and Pune. Lavasa will have 7 towns in its first and second phase.

The paper elaborates the unique challenges of a hilly terrain and the efficacy of GIS in addressing those issues. Mugaon, one of the towns, was conceived to be a center of education and entertainment activities. The primary considerations for Master Plan, prepared jointly with HOK, St. Louise USA, are as follows:

The preservation of slopes

Feasibility of construction of streets

Enhancement of natural ravines and streams

Utilization of scenic overlooks

Conservation of existing Flora

Rehabilitation of existing community

The final product was a broad land use map and circulation map demarcating space for various activities. This plan was the base for infrastructure design and various future business goals of company.
