Implementing a Customised Database-Driven Cartographic Production System
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Jeremy Conversi

Lonely Planet Publications are one of the largest travel guide book publishers in the world with offices in Melbourne, London and Oakland, with over 500 staff members and 360 authors.

Our commitment to independent travel, trustworthy advice and editorial independence sees us produce guidebooks and maps for much of the world, from a combination of on-the-ground research and the collective knowledge of a global travel community. Our guidebooks and maps are constantly evolving and always improving.

As part of this drive to continually improve, a new mapping platform is being developed to improve the efficiency of our map production for guidebook publications and also to support the growing web-based delivery of mapping to travellers. The platform will deliver a GIS based mapping system based on the latest database driven cartographic technology and involves the implementation of some very innovative solutions to common cartographic challenges.
