Theme and Role-Based Security Management for Enterprise Web GIS Viewer

In an enterprise environment, a Web GIS viewer usually needs to serve to multiple business functional units. A common and critical application security rule is that GIS information provided to those that need it to do their jobs is what they need, no more and no less. This paper presents a theme and role-based approach (TRA) to implement this application security rule. It also introduces how to apply this approach to manage enterprise GIS user accounts in windows’ server Active Directory (AD). The ArcGIS Server-based Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Basic Map Viewer was used as an example to illustrate how to combine AD and TRA together to manage user accounts in different business units and in different windows security domains.
