ArcMorpho: An Automated Approach to Modelling Morphometric and Hydromorphometric Characteristics of Drainage Basins Using a Geographical Information System (GIS)
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Khalid Al-Ahmadi, Nadir Hussain

Derivation of morphometric and hydromorphometric parameters of drainage basins is important for modelling in hydrology, watershed management, groundwater flows , physical geography, pedology, geomorphology, environmental science, climatology, agriculture, forestry and allied fields. ArcMorpho is a new software toolkit which has been designed and developed as a plugin for Esri ArcGIS software. It provides rapid, automated derivation of over 100 morphometric and hydromorphometric parameters and facilitates the creation of multiple diagnostic maps portraying the spatial morphology of drainage basins. Four categories of morphometric parameters of a drainage basin are based on: (i) area and shape; (ii) drainage channel networks; (iii) relief and (iv) hydromorphometric characteristics. The toolkit requires four input layers: (i) a digital elevation model; (ii) a slope map; (iii) a watershed map; and (iv) a drainage network map. Developed using Esri ArcObjects with Microsoft .Net framework, the toolkit lets users derive key morphometrical and hydromorphometrical parameters for modelling and provides an effective, integrated and extensible set of functions for preparing a comprehensive set of morphometric maps and statistics.
