Geospatial technology today is increasingly being adopted and used by the petroleum and natural gas industry for exploration and identification of prospective locations.

As part of a study to identify coal bed methane zones, RMSI extensively used ArcGIS to help convert and update geological entities to a spatial domain and model prospective core hole zones.

RMSI formulated selection criteria’s on structural, geological, geo-morphological controls with CBM associated parameters like coal thickness, fixed carbon, ash, volatile matter, moisture content, gravity anomaly for prospective deposits. ArcGIS spatial analyst was used within the decision space; a grid mesh of suitable size to run query analysis. Applying the assigned criteria, rich zones were delineated indicating high potential to undertake CBM core hole drilling.

Through a case study approach, this paper highlights the extensive utilization of remote sensing and GIS techniques to undertake a coal bed methane zone identification study within parts of India.
