Equipment Overkill—Mapping Features with Survey-Grade GPS
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Tobi Sellekaerts

The accuracy requirement for vector data used in the United States Air Force (USAF) Installation Geospatial Information and Services (IGI&S, formerly GeoBase) program is sub-meter; this data is primarily collected via field GPS surveys. For a variety of historic and mission-specific reasons, the GPS equipment of choice for installation mapping at USAF bases worldwide is Trimble's 5700/R7 series. Designed primarily for construction surveying, this equipment is capable of sub-centimeter accuracy – but as the available equipment, is used regularly to map features and populate the installation’s GIS. In addition, we use the Spatial Data Standard for Facilities, Infrastructure, and the Environment (SDSFIE) for feature nomenclature and classification – a format used (with some difficulty on this GPS equipment) for data dictionaries and attribute collection in the field. The USAF installation mapping community has developed some creative solutions to this 'equipment overkill', which will be addressed in this presentation.
