NYC Rat Portal: Accessing an ArcGIS Server Cache from ArcIMS
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Mike Wiley, Sarah Johnson, Daniel Kass

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications partnered with GeoDecisions to develop the Rat Information Portal (RIP). The goal of the project was to improve the Pest Control Services (PCS) program effectiveness by putting more complete information in the hands of the public. The RIP provides residents, landlords, restaurant operators, and the pest management industry with information about how to control pests on properties they own, manage or live in. The site contains map-based tools that enable users to gain a better understanding of rat activity on their properties and in their communities. PCS personnel also use the portal to answer questions from the public and prepare maps for distribution at community meetings. One technological innovation employed within the RIP is the ability to display an ArcGIS Server generated map cache from within ArcIMS.
