Metrics Analysis for Greenway Planning, Carolina Thread Trail Project
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Bob Heuer, Brenda Faber

The Carolina Thread Trail project is creating a regional trail network that will connect over 2 million people in central North and South Carolina. This is one of the largest regional greenway planning projects in the country. To qualify for participation and funding in the Carolina Thread Trail project, each county in the designated 15-county region is creating a greenway master plan that identifies a regional greenway “thread” that strategically links local communities, key destinations, and neighboring counties.

This presentation will describe a unique GIS application that has been developed to assist participating counties in designing and comparing alternative greenway routes. As Thread Trail connections are proposed, automated metrics can be evaluated for route profiling (e.g. total length, waterfront miles, use of existing infrastructure), connections analysis (e.g. towns, schools, parks, attractions), and walkable access for key populations (e.g. residents, children, seniors).
