AbstractAn AERA GIS Case Study: The Khentkawes' Town Excavation Track: Archaeology Author(s): Camilla Mazzucato The ability of Geographical Information Systems to strengthen archaeological research and to support the excavation process was demonstrated during 2007 and 2008 at the Ancient Egypt Research Associates (AERA) Khentkawes' town (KKT) excavation. During the past two seasons at Giza, Egypt, the AERA GIS team worked to define a method to routinely manage, store, and display archaeological data while they were collected in the field. Working on a daily basis with excavators and the survey team, the GIS team gathered, reviewed, and stored together in an ArcGIS geodatabase, all information pertaining to the KKT area, produced maps for field work, visualized the complete integrated dataset, and helped solve problems arising during field work. These practices lead to increased efficiency and accuracy in the data collection and also facilitated the interpretation and analysis of data. An attempt to create a three-dimensional stratigraphic model of selected KKT features was also undertaken.
