Abstract

Analyzing and Communicating NWS Weather Impacts Using GIS
Track: Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather
Author(s): Jack Settelmaier

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS) mission is to protect life and property and promote commerce. For over 135 years, the NWS has fulfilled this mission by providing accurate weather and hydrologic information, timely warnings, and relevant forecasts.

The NWS has made significant strides in understanding the GIS needs of our federal, state, and local government partners so that we can provide our products and services in GIS-friendly formats. Timely weather information delivered seamlessly into the decision-making operations of federal and state partners, as well as the larger GIS-using community, is an NWS goal.

This presentation will review two ways the NWS is making use of GIS: 1) analyzing forecast performance statistics at high-resolution temporal and spatial scales to increase our forecast’s value to decision-makers, and 2) communicating the impacts of forecast and observed weather information to partners and customers in collaborative environments.
