AbstractSidewalk Inventory for ADA Compliance with Advanced Technologies Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Zorba Conlen The City of Bellevue, Washington has completed a survey of our pedestrian environment (sidewalks and curb ramps) as required by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). This cutting edge project involved an unusual mix of technologies including a customized Segway scooter outfitted with a laser beam, gyroscope, GPS and a laptop running custom software. GIS support and analysis included Python scripts for processing and mapping massive amounts of very detailed information about sidewalk slope, grade, displacements, protrusions and other hazards. Field work also involved use of hand held GPS units with a customized ArcPad interface. Finally, GIS analysis aided decision makers in prioritizing the repair and mitigation of the inventoried hazards. The presentation will include an overview of the technology integration with a focus on how GIS was used for mapping, automation and analysis. Zorba Conlen City of Bellevue City of Bellevue P.O.
