A Geodatabase Solution to Mapping Open Space Lands
Track: Parks and Natural Reserves
Author(s): Jason Jones

GreenInfo Network has developed a geodatabase structure and methodology for cataloging public lands across the state of California. The California Protected Areas Database (CPAD) inventories lands of all sizes that have been protected for open space and conservation uses. To enhance spatial accuracy, CPAD’s methodology includes geospatial alignment through the use of assessor parcels.

Throughout the development of CPAD, GreenInfo Network has used a set of systematic procedures to produce a complete and reliable dataset. Some of the obstacles that have arisen along the way include tidal/submerged properties, ranges of public accessibility, and complex ownership/management relationships. This presentation will discuss the challenges we have faced along with future directions for the important task of mapping public lands across the nation.

CPAD was released in June 2008 and is freely accessible for non-commercial uses through the State of California’s CERES program.
