Changing the Way the Enterprise Views Data
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Tom Moen, Mary Helen Wood, Lyann Okada

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply recently completed the migration of a web-based intranet GIS application (Honolulu Online Utilities or 'HONU') to an ArcGIS Server platform. This migration provided the opportunity to address a number of design changes related to usability, accessibility, functionality, integration, maintenance, and performance. A primary goal of the re-design was to maintain existing functionality for the current user base while transitioning to a more flexible and expandable portal design. Development of the new design aimed to add new functionality as well as access to map-independent data. A successful design was achieved that provides a high level of usability for a wide range of users, including both 'map-centric' and 'data-centric' users. Users benefit from being able to access information of various types in a more efficient manner. Further, system administrators benefit from a design that provides a low-maintenance framework for expansion and integration with enterprise data.
