AbstractEvolving a GIS—Lessons Learned Track: GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation Author(s): Evan Brown Sarasota County, Florida has been utilizing GIS technology in its operations for the past 20 years. The County has continually evolved and improved its GIS implementation as technologies and philosophies pertaining to GIS have changed. The County’s GIS implementation has migrated from project based to departmental focus to adopting an enterprise GIS strategy. The County’s organizational structure for GIS has changed from independent staff to a consolidated department to a hybrid model of centralized management with distributed service delivery. This presentation will explore the lessons learned through the process of evolving a GIS in the aspects of executive support, organization structure, process creation, work order management, and staff development. This presentation is intended to share experiences and insight gained through successes and missteps so others may create a flourishing GIS.
