Abstract

How GIS Is Used in Site Selection
Track: Business GIS
Author(s): Barbara Dendy

Site selection is the process a company uses to find the optimal location for a new facility. The process involves a myriad of company objectives and criteria, often conflicting. The use of GIS provides greatly enhanced effectiveness and efficiency in the site selection process. By interpreting project criteria into a set of measurable screening criteria, GIS provides great value in determining and screening a target search region, resulting in qualified “Areas of Interest”. The presentation will show a GIS screening for a project seeking to supply an automotive or truck manufacturing facility. The screening will include nine Attraction criteria (including wage, labor force, and education information) and six Aversion criteria (unionization, natural disaster, and environmental information) and demonstrate the efficiency (speed) and effectiveness (geographic focus) of GIS in the site selection process.
