U.S. Army Europe: Automated Data Extraction and Production Using Python
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Brigitte Colin, Helene Touyeras

The ITAM Viewer has made European GIS data widely available to military training units, support organizations and decision makers worldwide. The ITAM Viewer offers a user-friendly and easy-to-use interface which enables non GIS professionals’ access to spatial data and tools.

The ITAM Viewer data sources have recent migrated to an Oracle Enterprise Geodatabase due to increasing DOD data standardization requirements. This, in conjunction with changes in the structure of the ITAM Viewer data layers, has forced us to find solutions of exporting the desired information easily and accurately so the data is up-to-date and layer production remains a manageable effort.

ITAM Viewer data layers creation is now automated by a Python script and it ensures a fast and efficient translation between the Enterprise Geodatabase and the ITAM Viewer. This paper presents the issues and solutions we encountered in this process.
