First Nations Environmental Public Health (EPH) Information Management System
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Steve Villebrun, Joan Yee

Our purpose was to develop and implement a system to assist in the management of data collected for the purposes of identifying, monitoring, addressing, and communicating environmental public health issues in Alberta First Nations communities. This project builds a foundation from which users will be able to spatially enable EPH business datasets allowing users to draw relationships which were previously impossible to determine. The project is a joint effort between the Health Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health (Alberta) and the First Nations EpiCentre of Alberta.

Using Esri software, and our business data, a geo-database was designed and application built that will have allow us to interface with other data management tools, starting with drinking water data, with future development in other areas of environmental public health. A major benefit is the ability of stakeholders to make evidence-based decisions in the interest of health protection and positive community development.
