AbstractSILAS II: Uncovering the Historical Past in Biblical Texts Track: Archaeology Author(s): Alyssa King, Lillian Larsen Teaching with maps is an effective learning method across a variety of disciplines, as maps provide a visual environment in which students can derive complex understandings through patterns and spatial relationships. In its first phase, The Spatially Interactive Literature Analysis System (SILAS) took this learning a step further, by providing an application which allowed college-level students to integrate biblical-era data and text within a spatial environment. The goal of the second phase of SILAS is to fine tune and further develop the mapping capabilities to allow for a deeper understanding of the bible as a historical document. For example, students will be able to cartographically represent their own confidence in biblical data, giving access to new insights on biblical history that before were hidden in static text. In this paper the implementation of historically focused spatial tools, cartographic representations, and the usability of SILAS in the classroom will be discussed.
