Identifying Potential Carsharing Locations in Central Florida Using GIS
Track: Transportation

Carsharing is so much more than the sharing of vehicles. It has immediate effects on quality of life, transit, development, congestion, and regional sustainability. In the last decade, Central Florida has experienced tremendous growth. Roadway congestion levels have increased so dramatically it has caused some to consider whether they want or even need a personal car for the daily activities.

Carsharing technology has been successful in larger urban cities like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, and New York City. In Central Florida, FDOT District 5 decided to use GIS technology to assess preferred or priority parking locations for carsharing. By creating a suitability overlay model in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, GIS features such as traffic volume density, landuse, population and employment density, transit proximity, development locations and other factors were criteria ranked and weighted to identify priority parking locations for carsharing in the Central Florida region.
