Abstract

Implementation of Cartographic Standards at the City of Bellingham, Washington
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Ann Stark

As use of GIS increases at the City of Bellingham, a need for implementing cartographic standards was identified, particularly by City Council members. This was accomplished by delivering templates, layer files, standards documentation, and cartography classes to City staff. Goals were to encourage the creation of maps that implemented professional cartographic standards; create a 'City' look to all maps identifiable to staff and citizens; standardize colors and styles of commonly displayed themes such as zoning, neighborhoods, and other jurisdictions; point users to the correct GIS data on the network; and to speed map making by allowing creation of the standard base map in just a few clicks. Topics discussed in this presentation will include the business case for cartographic standards, methods and outcomes, and lessons learned.
