Abstract

Wastewater System Capacity Tool Evaluates Potential Development Impacts
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Brian Schat, Ron Ramold, Chris Martin

As part of a master planning effort the Denver Wastewater Management department has modeled the capacity of the sanitary sewer system. The master plan project developed a GIS-based tool to analyze system capacity under multiple land use scenarios. Flows are based on a land use layer maintained by the Community Planning and Development department. After the network capacity was established a GIS tool, for use in ArcMap, was developed to allow the user to add flow at any node within the network. Flow increases are then propagated upstream or downstream and compared to pipe capacity on the fly. Results are summarized in a report that includes the estimated cost required to increase system capacity. This tool has proven useful when evaluating a potential development’s impact to the wastewater system.
