AbstractDevelopment of a GIS-Based Safety Analysis System Track: Transportation Author(s): Vinod Vasudevan, Vidhya Kumaresan, Shashi Nambisan The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate a safety analysis system that integrates crash data and roadway related information obtained from disparate sources. This system is developed using ArcGIS commercial software version 9.2 and its in-built VBA programming. Its customized user interfaces support queries for data analysis and display of results in graphical or tabular formats. It automates crash analyses for individual locations such as intersections, or for roadway segments. The system also contains a module to identify high crash locations based on methods identified from the published literature. The methods range from the simple crash frequency method to more complex weight-based methods based on crash outcomes. The system provides important inputs to decision makers and for public outreach activities regarding allocation of resources for roadway and safety enhancements. An application of the system is illustrated using data from the Las Vegas metropolitan area in the state of Nevada. Vinod Vasudevan UNLV - Transportation Research Center 4505 S.
