Wetland Degradation in Indian Punjab: A GIS Application
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Karanjot Kaur Brar

Hydrologic conditions, vegetation community, human landscape including agriculture, buildings and structures are key indicators for wetland condition and extent. A change detection analysis using GIS, remotely sensed images and aerial photographs, field survey and secondary sources was performed for a wetland mosaic of the Rivers Ravi, Beas and Satluj in Punjab, India. This analysis was performed to assess the degree of loss of historical wetland and the effects mediated by wetland regulations (or lack of them) and conservation policies. The manner in which the riverine wetlands of these river systems have responded to the pulses of development will help in drawing up a plan for conserving the existing wetlands and possible revival of those struggling to endure.
