Building a Case for the Construction of New Transmission Lines
Track: Electric Utilities
Author(s): James Fritz, William Chester

In order to meet future demands on existing electrical transmission infrastructure, Xcel Energy is planning to build three new high-voltage transmission lines over the course of the next decade, called the CapX2020 Project. In addition, to meet state mandates for renewable energy, these new lines will capture a portion of the electricity generated at the numerous wind farms in the state of Minnesota and beyond.

In order to build the case for building these new lines, CapX2020 managers turned to GIS technology to create maps of transmission line development relative to customer demand and population increases over the past six decades. The collection of maps created to meet management needs includes both static and interactive web-based products. These maps will be used in public outreach meetings, and for presenting the need for future transmission infrastructure before various regulatory agencies.
