Principles for a Modern, American Multipurpose Cadastre (AMPC)
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Author(s): Earl Epstein

A cadastre is a “record of interests in land, encompassing both the nature and extent of these interests”. (Need for a Multipurpose Cadastre, National Academy Press, 1980, p.5) The implementation of a modern, American multipurpose cadastre (AMPC) calls for an efficient, effective, and equitable provision of authoritative data in the public domain. Its focus must be at the local level to help address the expanding, large set of public and private land decisions. These principles are discussed, as are the status of existing systems and institutions. The impact of new technology as incentive to development of the AMPC is presented.
