Developing a GIS Education Training Program at The Nature Conservancy
Track: Education
Author(s): Jamie Chesser, Gillian Silvertand

The Nature Conservancy (TNC), one of the largest non-profit conservation organizations in the world, has over 750 GIS users. The spread of GIS throughout TNC is positive; however, the challenge comes in providing structured training to our large globally dispersed organization, while being cost conscious and carbon friendly. This presentation examines TNC’s solution to this challenge.

In brief, over the last year, TNC’s Technology Learning Center (TLC) has developed a GIS curriculum for employees. Easily located on the TNC intranet, the curriculum contains courses grouped by job role, so employees can easily find the training that best suits their needs. The curriculum includes Esri courses, as well as GIS courses targeting conservation developed in-house. TNC courses will be delivered in person and also through online workshops and self-paced web courses. Online delivery enables us to be more carbon friendly to the environment and fiscally responsible.
