AbstractGeomapping the Pele-Pillan Region of Jupiter’s Moon Io Track: Remote Sensing Imagery Author(s): Joyce Hogan, Julie Rathbun The Pele-Pillan region of Jupiter’s moon Io is an area of high volcanic activity. Planetary geologists and associated scientists can not currently view a comprehensive composite representing all the surface imagery and temperature data for this region that was captured in the late 1990s and early part of this decade by the Galileo spacecraft. A geographic information system (GIS) that simultaneously projects the imagery and temperature data captured by Galileo’s Solid State Imager (SSI), Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS), and Photopolarimeter-Radiometer (PPR) can aid in visualization and analysis of volcanic activity on this active moon. Current image processing techniques for Io require enhancement and an automated workflow is needed in order to create a complete GIS for Io by the United States Geological Survey deadline of July 2011. This paper focuses on the development of a prototype GIS for Io’s highly active Pele-Pillan region, using ArcGIS Model Builder for workflow management.
