Enhancing Soundex: GAIB, the Geographic Artificial Intelligence Bot

GIS is often referred to as a “collaborative technology”, at its best when knowledge is diffused amongst its many practitioners. GAIB (Geographic Artificial Intelligence Bot) is a project designed to use expert system and neural net technologies to foster such collaboration in the area of soundex processing. Soundex as an algorithm is very basic but can wield unusual results through commonly scored words that aren’t phonetically similar. GAIB will improve that through an intelligent agent as a web service, which will use neural net technology to foster learning such as: developing habit-based results for commonly searched words, secondary scoring of words based on click rates, scoring new words and adding them to its own body of knowledge and using these habits and click rates to reinforce its learning. This study will reveal why GAIB was built, how it works and what its success will mean for geographic artificial intelligence.
