Experiences with the Proposed “ArcGeology Version 1” Geodatabase Model
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Jordan Hastings

First proposed in 2006, “ArcGeology Version 1” (AG1), a relatively simple ArcGIS-centric geodatabase model for digital geologic map-databases, has undergone extensive use at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG). Altogether, over 60 geologic quads and 7 other geologic maps for non-quadrangle areas, at scales ranging from 1:12K to 1:62.5K, have been produced in the past 3 years. The model has also been extended slightly to facilitate multi-author, multi-scale map compilations (3 in-process) and integration with the ArcHydro Groundwater data model and tools from AquaVeo, which are also applicable to common geologic map-making tasks such as cross-sections. Additional Excel-based tools have been developed directly by NBMG to automate production of map-unit description lists and correlation diagrams, and to populate the related AG1 tables and domains accordingly. Evolution of the AG1 model to support geothermal and mineral exploration, mining and related activities in Nevada are ongoing.
