Marine Corps GIS Efforts to Implement a Service-Oriented Architecture
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Jason Thacker, William Russell

In accordance with the Marine Corps GIS Program (GEOFidelis) goals, the Western Regional Geospatial Data Center (GEOFIWEST) located at Camp Pendleton, California has made great strides in implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to integrate existing business systems within the enterprise GIS. By implementing a web services approach and utilizing products such as ArcGIS Server, Microsoft Office SharePoint Services (MOSS), ArcGIS Online and other SOA applications and information services, manual data transfers and direct database connections are quickly being phased out. As a result the Marine Corps is realizing increased unification of business processes, increased distribution of real-time data, and standardized presentation of information across the enterprise.
