AbstractEstimating Citywide Benefits from Stormwater BMPs in New York City Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Francisco Brilhante, Carter Strickland, Marc Korpus ArcGIS tools and techniques were used with New York City’s MapPLUTO (municipal tax lot parcel) and LION (street centerline) geographic databases to make an estimate of the aggregate citywide length of public streets and the area of house and apartment building lots where stormwater BMP (best management practices) structures may be installed during the next twenty years. MapPLUTO’s land descriptions and LION’s street detail were put to good if perhaps unanticipated use. By selecting the municipal data sets’ attributes and using overlay and analysis tools, GIS representations of streets and highways eligible for roadside swales and permeable pavements and of building lots suitable for such BMPs as blue roofs and green roofs were obtained. The resulting data was used to develop estimates of the long term benefits of a citywide BMP program in reducing stormwater runoff and its impact on waterways.
