AbstractIntegrating GIS with the Nevada Standardized Reclamation Cost Estimator Track: Mining and Geosciences Author(s): Brett Bingham, Josiah Gerber Federal and state regulations require reclamation of mining activities within Nevada on both public and private land. To guarantee that sufficient funds are available to reclaim mining disturbance, the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection require a financial obligation in the form of a bond. The Nevada Standardized Reclamation Cost Estimator (SRCE) is utilized by exploration and mining companies in Nevada to provide a uniform method of calculating the cost of reclamation. Through the technology of geographic information systems (GIS), a combination of global positioning systems and digitized areas of disturbance were input into a geodatabase which was subsequently integrated with the SRCE model to supply disturbance area. A more accurate calculation of disturbance will ensure that the mining companies have sufficient funds to restore mine sites to the most appropriate post-mining land use.
