Guam: Island-wide Multi-year Traffic Accident Mapping and Analysis
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Gary Davidson

The territory of Guam’s occurrence of traffic accidents is higher than the national average resulting in property damage, injury, and loss of life. A highly interactive, easily updatable GIS Geodatabase was developed to identify the island’s most dangerous intersections for targeted safety modifications.

The system incorporated over 48,000 pages of hand written accident reports, with each report having up to 295 unique data fields. Each accident report also included a hand drawn incident map. The reports were sent to two teams working simultaneously: Team 1 mapped the location, severity, and case number of each accident; Team 2 input the case number and remaining data into an Access database. The Access database was then linked to the map to produce a comprehensive Geodatabase of accidents

The searchable Geodatabase was used with Access to perform statistical rate and frequency traffic accident analysis presented in a Traffic Accident Hazard Identification Analysis report.
